A visually weak take on the tried-and-true slide-and-shoot formula, Assault pits players in their lone spaceship against a mothership launching a number of larger, better-armed, and suspiciously Demon Attack-esque beasties from above. The player's ship fires in two directions at once -- straight up and in the direction of the ship's lateral travel -- to deal with any aliens that reach ground level. But that minor nuance aside, there's little about Assault to inspire repeated play. Its clunky graphics and animation and repetitive action grow old fairly quickly.
